There’s you (the writer) and the reader. The reader gets to decide when the game’s over.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As soon as the reader is gone, they’re not reading your copy anymore. So you’re anticipating what’s going to keep them interested and intrigued with your copy ahead of time. Here’s how it’s done.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pick a primary target market. (Yes you can have more than one, but the more specific you make your target market, the easier it will be to sell to them. For our purposes, you need to pick one specific target market.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s define just what I mean and how I create my audience as a real person in my Field Guide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Target + Market = Tarket – a singular way to look at writing to one person rather than a mob. Get this one concept down and your copy will bond effortlessly with the reader. Because it’s just you and her in the room.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Oops – I let out another of my secrets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We’re limited in the English language when it comes to identifying rather than “he” I suggest if you use the pronoun “she” instead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your copy will go through a subtle filter that you may find is more palatable to more of your audience than you imagined. Of course, it depends on who your target market is.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have a lot to cover here, so don’t miss a single word. You must know the education level of your target audience to write effectively. In general, even educated people don't mind reading simple words.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simple means clear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there's a fine line between talking down to your market. Don't go there. For the most part, Americans read between the 11th and 12th grade levels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you know that best-selling books are written for the 8th to 10th grade level? "Reader's Digest" aims for the 10th grade level, while "Time" and "The Wall Street Journal" reach for the 11th.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So Keep It Simple, Sweetheart!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prepare a Fact Sheet for your target market. Write down all the facts and demographic information you know about them. Here are a few questions to get you started;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Age&lt;br /&gt;• Gender&lt;br /&gt;• Education&lt;br /&gt;• Family status&lt;br /&gt;• Socioeconomic status&lt;br /&gt;• Profession/occupation&lt;br /&gt;• Hobbies&lt;br /&gt;• Geographic location&lt;br /&gt;• Media they consume (including Web sites, blogs, magazines, television shows)&lt;br /&gt;• Etc…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, find a picture of your newly born “tar-ket”. Make him or her as real as possible. In fact, he or she can BE real.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you would like to focus on a client or friend that fits the bill, that’s fine too. Just do the brain work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BONUS – Have a few more minutes on the clock? Do a search in Google on your target market and see what pops up. Check out a few Web sites while you're at it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now reset the timer and do YOUR product. My goal is to get your copy up to speed FAST so you can start marketing yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I like to use the analogy of one of those big circular targets you see used in archery. You want to get into the bull’s eye of who your target market is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I want to get right in that bright red circle at the center. But those concentric circles around it are also valuable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They do have different value points. But the funny thing is that the more specific you are the more you are in the bull’s eye.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more the concentric circles are pulling you towards the center, you are still attracting the same people. It’s amazing but true that people don’t need to worry about appealing to everybody.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Putting yourself in the shoes of your client is the best thing you can ever do. Offer a free sample issue on your Web site or have one available by e-mail autoresponder. Some people won't sign up for anything until they can see it first.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   6. ___ 6. List your e-zine in free e-zine directories. There are hundreds of these on the Web where people visit to search for e-zines on particular topics. Make sure you're here so you can be found! (One of the best is Charlie Page's Directory of E-zines)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   7. ___ 7. Swap ads with other e-zines. Search online e-zine directories for other e-zines whose target readership matches yours, and contact their publishers. Swap at least three ads in a row for best results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   8. ___ 8. Buy ads in other e-zines. Again, search those directories for other e-zines whose target readership matches yours, and see their ad specifications and rates. Purchase at least three ads in a row for best results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   9. ___ 9. Plug your e-zine in your e-mail signature. After your usual contact information at the bottom of all your e-mails, be sure to include a two- or three-line plug for your e-zine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  10. ___ 10. Get published in OTHER e-zines. There are dozens of Web sites where other publishers visit to pick up free content for their e-zines. Why not post YOUR articles there for them to use? But, in order to build a list, you have to first convince people to give you their names and email addresses and get their permission to add them to your list.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my most recent article about this topic, I suggested having a free eBook on your opt-in page and offering it to customers and prospects in return for their permission to stay in touch with them. And, eBooks work great for this purpose, however, the though of writing a document of between 30-150 pages is enough to scare some people away from developing any free information product at all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you fall into that category, don't worry. I have another suggestion for you. Instead of offering a free eBook in exchange for your prospects' and customers' names and email addresses, you can offer them a special report; a document specially created to give them just a tiny taste of what you can offer them if they choose to do business with you. The great thing about a special report is that it's nowhere near as long as an eBook, so creating one won't seem like such a daunting task.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In reality, a special report only needs to be between 7-15 pages long. You can create a longer report if you'd like, but anything over 30 pages really should be turned into an eBook instead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Special reports are very popular right now for a couple of reasons. First, like eBooks, they can be downloaded immediately upon completion of the opt-in process. Second, they're short and won't take your clients and prospects very long to read. And third, they give just enough information to let people know that you know what you're talking about without overwhelming them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, because they're shorter, special reports are a lot easier and less time consuming to develop and create than eBooks. Your customers and prospects are visiting your site because they're already somewhat interested in what you have to offer them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, by offering them 7-15 pages of information about a certain aspect of your particular business, you're showing them what they can expect to get from you if they come in and purchase your product or service.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Coming up with a topic for your special report doesn't have to be difficult either. Just think of something your customers are always asking you about and then make a list of everything you know about that topic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One thing I like to do is to go through the alphabet, starting with the letter, "A" and see how many things I can think of having to do with that topic that start with each letter of the alphabet. The goal is to keep listing things one by one until you get to the letter, "Z".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For instance, let's say a travel agency wanted to offer a special report on their opt-in page and they decide they'll give away a report about the things someone should know before traveling to Europe. While brainstorming for ideas to put in the report, the travel agent might make a list that looks like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A - Airlines' restrictions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;B - Baggage&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C - Currency&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;D - Do's and Don'ts&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;E - Excursions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F - Food&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the list would continue until they reached the letter, "Z". Once you have your list, you then have 26 different things to include in your special report. One special report of about 30 pages can be the start of multiple information products and Internet based marketing concepts. This article gives seven ways to use your special report as an Internet marketing tool as well as a marketing concept to use offline.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Create a Series of Reports: Take portions of the special report and turn it into smaller sections that can be a series of reports. If your original report was 30 pages, you can create 10 to 15 small reports by creating two to three page reports from the 30 pages of information.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be sure to include enough information in each of the smaller reports to make them informative and valuable. Develop an introduction and summary section for the separate reports.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Develop Internet Articles. Create a cover using a graphic or fonts and print the cover in a heavy stock paper. Expand into a Book: Instead of going smaller go larger and expand the 30 page special report into a book. Today, books are getting shorter instead of longer. Therefore, 60 to 75 pages would make a good length for a printed book. You can use a print-on-demand (POD) service and have the book perfect bound.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Create a cover and write the information for the back of the book. Remember, with a book the back cover copy and the table of contents or the two most read areas that help to sell the book.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Develop a Strategic Plan. A special report is large enough to use as a strategic plan for your business operations. Take a look at the current economy and see where your business fits. If the economic crisis is affecting competition, use the special report to create your SWOT analysis and write out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Analyze how you will meet the demands of the economic crisis by making the necessary changes to respond to customer needs in the market. Use your strategic report to get more business by sharing it with larger firms that might be able to hire you to&lt;br /&gt;freelance because of our foresight and strategic planning abilities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Create a White Paper. Turn the special report into a White Paper. A white paper is normally an industry report that tells specific information about an aspect of a business. You can always create you own white paper to highlight innovations in your business. This is good for any size company.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For instance, maybe you have developed a new business system that helps virtual assistants do better project management. Candy, the older assistant who really ran the company, had the radio on in her office.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(She actually bossed me around sort of like the Meryl Streep character in “The Devil Wears Prada”. But most of the time she tolerated me. And today she actually invited me to listen in.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The news was blasting the unfolding details about the Columbine tragedy. It was unthinkable. Horrific.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I jumped on the Internet and began following the story of two social outcasts plotting out an evil plan to kill their fellow students and teachers. I was especially upset because I had two young sons in elementary school while I was stuck behind a desk, unable to leave.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See when my boys, Justin and Chase, were first born in 1990 and 1992, I was a stay-at-home mom. We spent every day reading, going to parks, visiting museums – just hanging out together. It was terrific.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But with my divorce in the mid 1990s, I was forced to go to work each day, leaving them in the YMCA after school care program. I realize I’m not alone - a lot of parents have to work outside the home to make ends meet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But my oldest son had a serious case of ADD and emotional immaturity. I was warned by two of his preschool teachers that he was a child who REALLY needed his mother or he could self-destruct…like those kids at Columbine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That was the day I realized I couldn’t continue being away from my kids anymore. I had to find an escape. It took some research and a leap of faith before I pulled together enough courage to quit and become a full-time writer. It wasn’t a straight path to success but that is the story of why Red Hot Copy was born.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's my story. Whenever we hear a story, by nature we look for connections to our own lives (after all, it truly IS all about “me”). That relating slashes the timeframe for bonding. And we all do business with those we know, like and trust.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5) Stories bust through sales resistance.  Nobody likes to be sold to. But we don’t mind kicking back and listening to (or reading) a story. You’re much more likely to keep the prospect’s attention by telling a story than hitting him or her over the head with hype.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So for your own story inspiration, pay attention to little events that happen to you. Get in the habit of writing them down every day in a notebook you dedicate just to stories. (Type them if you like but it’s been proven there is a connection between writing things out by hand and brain stimulation.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don’t edit at first. Just get it all out there. Over time, you will start getting more concise. The point is to create a habit. I mean asking them to take the next logical action in order for them to get something, or do something, or find out something and give you something.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What action you ask in your marketing depends on where you're at in your relationship with the person; where they are in the sales process; and what marketing tactic you're using to communicate with them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some examples of typical "call to action" steps that you will be asking of your prospects and customers:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- your opt-in box on your website asks for them to fill out their name and email in exchange for your free-giveaway&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- when they opt-in you send an email asking them to confirm&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- in an initial contact letter or email you let them know that you'll be calling them in 2 days to follow up&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- after a workshop you can ask them to sign a sheet if they are interested in finding out when your next presentations will be&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- on the bottom of each page on your website you provide a link to more information on the site, or how to get in contact with you, or link to the shopping cart to buy your products&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- when someone buys an ebook you send an email with link to the product and ask them to please contact you with any questions, suggestions or problems&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- after a teleseminar, you send out an email telling them where, and how, they can get access to a recording of the call&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- at a presentation or talk you can ask for their contact information in exchange for a valuable article or subscription to your e-zine&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- in a networking situation you can ask for their business card so that you can send them the opt-in link to your free-giveaway&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- on your blog you can ask people to send you an answer to a specific question&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- in your author resource box for articles you ask people to visit your website for more information and to get access to your free-giveaway&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- in your e-zine or newsletter you talk about one of your services or products and then provide a link that takes them to the web page with more information&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In any marketing that you do, provide some kind of call to action for people. The first thing you’re going to do is a little “dreaming.”  That’s right.  I want you to sit down and imagine your “perfect” business. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s pretend that it’s 5 years from now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What does your business look like?  Describe it.  Where is your office?  What is your title?  What does your office look like?  Do you have a staff or team?  How many?  What are they like? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s important that you write down on paper your dream.  Put as many details into it as you can – how much money do you make a year?  What kind of lifestyle do you have because of your business?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The reason that it’s important to dream first is because if you don’t have a vision – an idea of what you want – how are you going to know when you get there?  Start with the big picture first. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every time you get discouraged, just knowing where you want to end up and exactly what you want to achieve can help you to stay focused and motivated, even during the most difficult of circumstances.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’re a visual person, you might even want to create a dream book that you can paste pictures in of the things you want.  (The world’s experts on goal setting and business building and even top sports figures all agree that visualization is one of the basic building blocks of getting what you want.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://cli.gs/AR5069"&gt;Get Smart&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  2. Now create your long-term goals.  Here are a few things to keep in mind about goals:  Write them down.  Give each goal a deadline.  And make your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Long-term goals can be goals that you want to achieve anywhere from 1 to 5 years down the road. Now let’s break down one of your long-term goals. (This is also called “chunking” your goals.)  For example – if you decide that within one year you want to be making $20,000 a year working part-time in your home party consultant business, one of the things you’ll need to figure out is what your net average party sales are. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(You can either take your total sales for the last year and subtract your expenses, or if you haven’t been in business for a year yet, take your last month’s party sales and add them up.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now subtract your expenses – what it cost you to do business.  Next, multiply that number by 12.  Then take your “goal” amount - $20,000.  Divide that by 12.  (I’m going to round it up to $1,667.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to reach your goal of $20,000 a year, you only have to earn $1,667 a month – which really isn’t that much.)  Now look at the number you came up with for your net sales. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s say you came up with $300 per party, and you’re holding an average of 4 parties a month.  At your current level, you only have to make another $5,600 in the next 12 months – or an additional $466.67 a month. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which means there are two very simple ways you could meet – actually exceed your goal.  Increase your sales at every party – in this example, that means you only need an additional $116.67 per party. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or hold two more parties a month, and you’ll exceed your goal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://cli.gs/AR5069"&gt;Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  4. Now let’s work on creating short-term goals that will help you achieve your long-term goal.  If the average guest at a party spends $50.00, then that means that you would only need three additional guests each month – and you’ll meet or exceed your goal. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What can you do this week to help each one of your hostesses get one or two more guests to their parties?  What about a contest?  A fun new theme?  Can you find a new way to motivate your hostesses? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about encouraging them to give out catalogs to each person they invite who can’t come to the party? Or offering a special – and highly coveted prize – to the hostess with the highest sales for the month?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s all there is to it.  Know what you want – have a vision for your business.  Create long-term goals that are SMART.  Chunk those goals down into doable steps each week or each day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Work on each step until you’ve achieved it, and then move on to the next.
